I hate the Police

How often do you hear “I hate the police?” Open any newspaper and you are bound to find something negative about the police. Heck even some articles that are positive about the police, will have some negative dig on the cops. Granted no one comes into this profession looking for fame and admiration from the adoring public. But I did not become a police officer so I would be hated for no other reason than my clothing.

Hate the police

Police being nice

I was sent the photo seen here with a little story.

Rod Clemons is blind. He knows how to get around his neighborhood based on routes he has been following for years. Then one day a shooting takes place. The sidewalk on his route is now a crime scene.

Rod walks towards the yellow tape. Officer Joe Pecora can see Rod walking up. So Officer Pecora with out a second thought goes over to Rod to offer help.

Officer Pecora then leads Rod around the crime scene, back to his familiar path of travel.

Along the way Officer Pecora even helps Rod to find an ATM machine.

If you are on the right Facebook pages this is something you likely saw. Did anyone see this on the nightly news? Did you see it in your local paper? Outside of someone emailing this to me and to other public safety related pages I have never seen this published.

Why? Because many people say “I hate the Police”. Cops doing good things does not sell.

Yet everyday officers just like Joe Pecora are doing simple acts of kindness just like this. Everyday officers touch someones life in a positive meaningful way. But the average citizen has no way to know this.

Now I realize that I am preaching to the choir here seeing how most of our readers are involved in Public Safety. But I even hear firefighters and EMTs say “I hate the police”.

So here is my challenge to you… Share the positives.

If you see something posted online that is Pro-Police, share it with anyone who is not a police officer. Help the average citizen to see the police are not the enemy. They are fellow people looking do a good job in their chosen profession, just as any other professional is.
