Venting about a Venti

I am one of the many lucky public safety workers who holds multiple part-time jobs in addition to my full time work. So I get the great pleasure of teaching some Criminal Justice classes at a local community college. Don’t take this wrong I actually truly enjoy teaching and there are some awesome students who you know will make great cops some day. But sometimes there is always that one…

The school I teach at believe it or not has uniform policy for many of the degree programs. Kids in the cooking program have to have a chef jacket on in class, kids in auto body have to have on a shop shirt and so on… In the Criminal Justice area the uniform is simply a polo shirt.

The reason for the uniforms is simple. There are areas that are NOT open to the public. The kitchen is only for Chef Students. The body shop is only for Automotive Students. The shooting range is only for the Criminal Justice Students. So by being in uniform any instructor will know that someone is in someplace they do not belong. This keeps theft done to virtually zero on campus and adds to general campus safety also.

So marks the end of the 3rd week of classes. There is one student who has yet to come to class in the uniform. She is in the same cloths that most female bar tenders have on at a college bar, as in low cut top and daisy duke shorts. Today I call her on it and she tell me she can not afford the uniform so she does not feel she needs to buy it. These polo shirts are sold for $16.

I can’t help but to notice that she has a Starbucks coffee in her hand as she said I can’t afford to by a polo. Every class she shows up with a Starbucks coffee. Heck I can’t help but to notice she has an Iphone, a nice laptop, and even a Coach purse. Yes I know what the hell a coach purse is and yes I know how darn expensive they are.

So I have to say “are you serious?”… “Where the hell are priorities?”… oh and “Do you think I am stupid?… You can’t buy a $14 polo shirt but have a $4 coffee every day. Wow… Priorities…

Am I wrong here?
