Book Review: Duke City Desperado

Ever hear that saying “two wrongs make a right”… how about saying “a few rejects make a genius”. Duke City Desperado is about that second quote. A few idiots who can’t get anything right, yet when they come together good things happen.

DukeCity-DspThe story is about two small time criminals Dylan and his mentor Doc. They try to rob a bank but it goes sideways quickly. Doc is arrested, but Dylan makes an escape.

For the rest of the book the story branches in two directions. Doc dealing with the county jail and trying to figure a way out of trouble. While at the same time Dylan is trying to find a way out of town as the manhunt for him keeps closing in. Dylan’s miss adventures take up the majority of the story.

The book has a great pacing to it. The narrative bounces between the two main characters and a number of the secondary characters they meet. Meaning if one character finds a moment of rest, one other character finds them self in hot water. This pacing keep the action going and the pages turning.

This is the kind of book that is perfect for a trip. If you are going to be riding in a car, traveling by plane or sitting out in the sun relaxing this Duke City Desperado is a great way to pass the time. I got caught up in the story and did not realize a few hours had past. Which was perfect relaxing on a family trip last week.

The author Max Austin also wrote Duke City Hit, which I reviewed a few months ago. The books share the city of Albuquerque New Mexico (AKA Duke City) as the central location. But none of the people or plot lines cross over making it necessary to read other “Duke City” stories.
